From Sage:
“Hi everyone in the Portland/surrounding area! My name is Sage I’ve had T1D for almost 22 years now (diagnosed at 3 and also have celiac and hypothyroid disease) and I’m also a professional whitewater kayaker on team USA. This summer I’m partnering with the Colombia River Gorge Junior Kayak Club for a “Diabetes Day” in Hood River, OR. I’ve wanted to put on an event like this for years and I’m so excited it’s finally happening! Little bit of a background story on me first- my parents raised me with a very active lifestyle. However, anytime I spoke with a doctor since I can remember (endos included) I was always told I couldn’t go far in sports due to diabetes. I was determined to prove them wrong and have had a couple world championship titles to do so. I know so many other diabetics who have experienced the same thing and were scared into never trying new sports or things they wanted to do. That’s basically what inspired this diabetes day- I want to give kiddos a chance to experience something fun while also having the support of someone who understands what it’s like to have T1D. Now for the fun stuff!”
